Tolkien’s Lore:

In the books, Aragorn only carries the Shards of Narsil and reforged as Andúril. There is no reference to him using a ranger sword of this type.

“He drew out his sword, and they saw that the blade was indeed broken a foot below the hilt. ‘Not much use is it, Sam?’ said Strider. ‘But the time is near when it shall be forged anew.’ ” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Adaptation Notes:

In Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the Lord of the Rings, Aragorn wields this sword from this first appearance in the Prancing Pony to the Marshalling of the Rohirrim at Dunharrow. This sword was made in design of the Northern Rangers simplicity but used masterfully to protect the hobbits at Weathertop and as a commanding weapon when defending the Deeping Wall of Helm’s Deep. Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen was said to have carried this sword with him at nearly all times throughout filming as we wanted to connect with Aragorn as a swordsman. The sword seen on film was designed by Ben Wootten and the sword forged by Master Swordsmith Peter Lyon of Weta Workshop.
