Tolkien’s Lore:

Glamdring was originally borne by Turgon, the King of Gondolin and was so deadly that the orcs nicknamed the sword “Beater.” 6500 years later when Gandalf finds Glamdring in the troll horde (along with Orcrist and a soon to be named Sting) during the adventures of the Hobbit. When Thorin’s company is captured by the orcs of the Misty Mountains, they recognize and fear this legendary sword. Being of ancient elven make like Sting and Orcrist, Glamdring glows blue in the presence of orcs. Gandalf notably strikes down the Goblin King in the Hobbit and Durin’s Bane (the balrog in Moria) during the Lord of the Rings.

“Elrond knew all about runes of every kind. That day he looked at the swords they had brought from the trolls’ lair, and he said: “These are not troll-make. They are old swords, very old swords of High Elves of the West, my kin. They were made in Gondolin for the Goblin-wars. They must have come from a dragon’s hoard or goblin plunder, for dragons and goblins destroyed that city many ages ago. This, Thorin, the runes name Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver in the ancient tongue of Gondolin; it was a famous blade. This, Gandalf, was Glamdring, Foe-hammer that the kind of Gondolin once wore. Keep them well!” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

Adaptation Notes:

In Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, Glamdring’s history and usage is mostly aligned with Tolkien’s written lore. The sword is found in the troll horde during An Unexpected Journey and Gandalf uses the sword to destroy the Goblin King, Durin’s Bane, and plenty of orcs throughout the six movies. In The Two Towers film, Gandalf is shown collecting lightning with Glamdring and stabbing Durin’s Bane with the energized sword. The primary deviation from Tolkien’s lore in the films was that Glamdring does not glow blue in the presence of orcs. The film makers made the decision to make Sting uniquely special in that regard.

The runes on the blade are of the Angerthas Cirth:

In Sindarin Elvish this reads, “Glamdring. Turgon aran Gondolin tortha gar a matha. i vegil Glamdring gûd dae[dhe]lo[th], dam an Glamhoth.”

In modern English this reads, “Glamdring. Turgon King [of] Gondolin wields, has and holds [the] sword Glamdring, Foe [of] Morgoth’s realm, hammer to [the] Din-horde”
