SWORD CARE TIPS FROM CASTLE KON

As you may be aware, we here at the Castle are just two sword collectors just like you and not some big company. For over a decade we have stuck to just selling the collectible products as our goal was to spread our love of Tolkien for the lowest prices. Recently, we have been getting many inquiries to sell United Cutlery’s Metal Glo product. You ask and here we go!

What we do here in the Castle Armory is as follows:

1. Wipe all factory grease off with a dry microfiber towel

2. Clean the metal parts with any cleaner. Metal Glo works as a cleaner and polisher so it works, but many other cleaners work fine too.

3. Condition the leather with any appropriate conditioning product (we just use leather shoe conditioner)

4. Polish that blade with a different microfiber cloth. A nice rub with Metal Glo again or Renaissance Wax should do the trick. There are many products out there for high carbon kitchen knives that will work too.

General sword care notes:

– Our stainless blades we clean every few months depending on dust build up getting stuck on the polish. We try to oil out high carbon blades at least once per month. Dust sticking on the blade could absorb moisture then damage the blades (especially high carbon steel ones)

– Hand oils from finger prints can cause rust, even on stainless steel blades. Wipe off and clean immediately if someone touches the blade.

– We do NOT recommend storing your swords in the scabbards unless for travel. We have personally had well oiled swords get rust marks while in scabbards for only a couple months. Granted we are are in a high humidity area, but grinding rust marks off is such a hassle.

– Like other products, keep the items out direct sunlight to prevent sun bleaching of plaques and leather.

– It is a fun balance because in humid areas (like here in Florida), we have to clean the blades more but condition the leather less. In dry areas (say Arizona), blades will likely need oiled less, but leather conditioned more.

Personally, we use a variety of different non-toxic cleaners when initially cleaning our collectibles. Our current cleaner we use is called “Gunzilla.” While we don’t sell this product, it is great for cleaning, but not so much for displaying “nice shiny daggers.” Another product we highly recommend Renaissance Wax for display. We have personally had the same container of RenWax for over 5 years now.

We here are not about being fancy or forcing Metal Glo on you. It is a great product and use it on rotation with our other polishing products.
