Tolkien’s Lore:

Andúril was forged from the Shards of Narsil for the rightful King of Men Aragorn in 3018 of the third age. After carrying the Shards for most of his life, Aragorn has the sword reforged prior to the Fellowship departing from Rivendell. The sword then receives a special scabbard made by Galadriel in Lothlorien that would protect it from damage even in defeat. Aragorn wields this sword to lead armies of men and lay his claim as heir to the throne of Gondor.

“The Sword of Elendil was forged anew by Elvish smiths, and on its blade was traced a device of seven stars set between the crescent Moon and rayed Sun, and about them was written many runes; for Aragorn son of Arathorn was going to war upon the marches of Mordor. Very bright was that sword when it was made whole again; the light of the sun shone redly in it, and the light of the moon shone cold, its edge was hard and keen. And Aragorn gave it a new name and called it Andúril, Flame of the West.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Adaptation Notes:

In Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the Lord of the Rings, Andúril is only present in the Return of the King as Aragorn was portrayed as cautious of his heritage due to the failures to destroy the One Ring. Aragorn’s betrothed, Arwen, convinces her father, Lord Elrond Half-Elven, to reforge the Shards of Narsil into Andúril. Aragorn then uses this sword to summon the Dead Men of Dunharrow to fight in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and later to lead the Host of the West against the Black Gate. The sword seen on film was designed by John Howe and forged by Master Swordsmith Peter Lyon of Weta Workshop.

The runes on the blade are of the Angerthas Eregion mode of Cirth:

In Quenyan Elvish this reads, “Anar. Nányë Andúril i né Narsil i macil Elendilo. Lercuvanten i móli Mordórëo. Isil.”

In modern English this reads, “Sun. I am Andúril who once was Narsil, sword of Elendil. The slaves of Mordor shall flee from me. Moon.”

The script on the pommel is in Tengwar script:

In Quenyan Elvish, “Narsil essenya, macil meletya; Telchar carnéron Návarotesse”

In modern English, “Narsil [is] my name, [a] mighty sword; Telchar made me in Nogrod”
